Essay 3

Essay 3

I am choosing to use my third, mystery source as Meet the Life Hackers by Clive Thompson. I found this article using the link and sources provided by my professor but I chose to click on this one because it related back to something we had read in Richard Restak’s, Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era, when he talked about life hacks. This essay is about how to find the perfect middle ground between distractions from technology that are harmful and distractions from technology that are actually beneficial. It discusses multitasking and how that is good and bad for the workplace.

I think that this seems like a reputable source for multiple reasons. The first one, obviously, is that my professor provided it for me so she probably trusts it. Another way I checked to see if it was reputable was using the website Snopes, which the librarian showed us how to use in class the other day, and it checked out on there.

When I first started searching for a source for this new essay, I was looking for one to go along with the last essay I had written about how digital technology is beneficial to us and how a constant wealth of information helps us. However, after reading a few different articles, I decided I wanted to try to write this new essay from a different stance and essentially write the opposite; how technology IS distracting us too much from our everyday lives and how it is preventing people from being able to pursue a purpose and meaning. I think it will be refreshing to write from a different viewpoint than previously and it will help to expand my knowledge on this topic.

  1. Amanda,
I am just so excited that you are challenging yourself to argue a different stance than your last paper. This experience should serve you and your education. I also think it’s great that you used Snopes to check your essay’s viability. I’m curious what you found. I’ve always understood Snopes as a way to check the accuracy of rumors or other news-like memes. I am interested to read your next paper. Keep up the good work.
